5 Reasons Why Jack U Dominated Ultra Music Festival [Incl. Full Set & Tracklist]

Going into Ultra Music Festival 2014, most people were saying without a doubt that one of the most highly anticipated acts of the weekend was going to be Jack U‘s worldwide festival debut during Sunday, front and center on the mainstage. Needless to say, dance music’s new favorite back to back duo truly threw down one of the best sets of the weekend. They had the crowd packed at the relatively early time of 5:30pm. Even though many festival goers were tired after a long week of celebrations and shows, the entire crowd was going crazy and moving in all the right ways.

Jack U’s debut set covering so many different styles; Bingo Players’ “Cry (Just A Little)“, DJ Snake & Lil Jon’s “Turn Down For What” which Lil Jon even made an appearance for. Essentially Jack U’s set was incredibly diverse and goes to prove the nature of Diplo and Skrillex‘s relationship, breaking down the barriers of the DJ set, playing whatever they wanted.

At the end of the day, if even half of the IDs from this set get released, the world is in for a treat. So, the question stands other than the apparent appeal of a Skrillex and Diplo back to back set, why were these two able to demolish that mainstage crowd fairly early on Sunday evening?

Recess
The album that requires no introduction, Recess was without a doubt one of the albums to be played at Ultra this weekend. With the recent return of Skrillex material to the world, Jack U’s set was full of screeching bass-packed bliss from Recess including “Stranger”, the title track with Fatman Scoop, “Recess”, both collaborations from the album with the Ragga Twins and “Ease My Mind”, which has a brilliant bootleg courtesy of GTA on the way, and other new Skrillex jams. Fittingly, the two also played Skrillex’s remix with Milo & Otis and Kill The Noise of “NRG”.

Old School Hip-Hop
As of late in particular, old school hip-hop tracks being dropped by DJs at major festivals has become somewhat of a trend. Jack U made sure to keep the vibes easy going by unleashing periodic hip-hop anthems like Party Favor’s flip of DJ Kool’s “Let Me Clear My Throat” to current tracks like “My Nigga” by YG.

Diplo’s Mad Decent
Diplo himself is on top of his game as usual, bringing a new Major Lazer ID and his own signature anthems to the table with “Revolution”, “Earthquake” and everybody’s favorite twerk anthem “Express Yourself”, which became well acquainted with “Bangarang” as the two were mashed so to speak during the set. Diplo was sure to highlight a few tracks from his urban-style label including Elliphant’s “Revolusion”.

The Ultra Atmosphere
If Miami Music Week is known for anything it’s trying new things and what better place for two talented individuals spearheading the electronic music movement to come together for a legendary set than at Ultra Music Festival. Last year saw the debut teasing at a groundbreaking album from Avicii, who a year later is selling out arenas and dominating radio airwaves. The accommodating staff and crew at Ultra truly understand the nature of experimentation with music.

Diplo’s Toilet Paper Gun
With world class production being such a central focus of the Ultra experience, who better than Diplo to take it upon himself to bring out a homemade toilet paper cannon during the set? Clearly the Mad Decent ring leader felt that the pyrotechnics, periodic Co2 blasts, and confetti cannons weren’t enough. As the set began to wind down, Diplo appeared in front of the stage holding a contraption that looked like a leaf blower combined with a toilet paper roll. Either way, props for creativity once again Diplo.
