Hailing from New York, The Chainsmokers have claimed the top spot on Billboard’s dance chart with their viral hit #SELFIE, released on Dim Mak Records. The track only took a short five weeks to become number one with 111,000 downloads sold so far — the fastest rise to the position since Lady Gaga’s “Applause” — and pushes Avicii’s “Hey Brother” down to second place.
#SELFIE’s lightspeed climb to the top could be attributed to the strategic recruitment of celebrities and social media stars, including Steve Aoki, David Hasselhoff, Nash Grier from Vine and Acacia Brinley from Instagram, as well as an open call for selfie submissions from fans.
