I guess it’s seeming as though Deadmau5 has released a new techno track called “Sunspot (White Space Conflict)” under the project testpilot. Multiple sources have posted about this already, but some come off as though it is, and some say it’s simply conjecture. From what I have gathered the evidence points towards Joel actually being behind this, given three main things:
1. Two years ago Joel uploaded a techno song “Sunspots”to his Soundcloud, but the track was taken down.
2. Joel had this conversation with Modakode.
3. Richie Hawtin, the founder of the label Plus 8, released the track with this statement.
“It’s been nearly two years since the last PlUS 8 record, but it seemed fitting that this record in particular, made by another skinny white kid from Canada, became part of the label’s collection and history.”
The minimal techno track is not inconceivably Deadmau5, but it’s not like anything we usually hear from his world. The ominous, almost black undertone has been a motif in his music before, but I won’t really count that as evidence, despite it still being applicable. Richie Hawtin and Joel spent time together at SXSW; they even had a b2b set at the closing party, which further pushes this towards being in fact the case. With all this information, we can roll with the Deadmau5/testpilot combination that Joel has packing. It’s pushing me to get more into techno.
Accompanying the original is a remix from Pig & Dan that you will want to check out as well.
