Monstercat’s 30 Track Trek – Join The Expedition [Album Review]

Droptek – What’s Going On (feat. Isabel Higuero)

After five great tracks, this, the sixth, is a beautiful blend of electro and trap influences. To kick-start the highlights of this album, Droptek and Isabel Higuero come together for a beautifully produced track full of mystique and intrigue. The perfectly placed vocal chops and deep synths serve as an excellent contrast with an intricate percussion line filling out the builds and drops. Do you see what’s going on? Cause I surely do… an expertly assembled compilation.

Pegboard Nerds – Bassline Kickin (Dzeko & Torres Remix)

Immediately following Droptek’s dope contribution, Dzeko & Torres enter with a remix of Pegboard Nerds’ hit Bassline Kickin. An excellent rendition, the drop is very characteristic of the D&T we have come to know and love. Beautifully made synths, expertly constructed risers, superb vocal chops, and well used noise result in an amazingly produced remix. Did I mention this one is available for free download here?

Case & Point – Savage

Up next are the always wonderful Case & Point. Using a battle-cry sample, they are surely ready to release the savagery of this incredible track. Heavier than we are used to from the Boston duo, there are no complaints to be heard; this original is brilliantly crafted. A dirty synth drop and deep bass line are amplified by processed percussion and the sounds of a distant storm that complete the intended mood. Making use of a plethora of instruments (including my personal love, strings) in the build overlaid with their expected synths, Case and Point deliver with Savages.

Atmozfears – State of Mind (feat. In-Phase)

One of the hardstyle kings is up after Savage with a melodic track featuring an excellent vocal hook that turns out to be an absolute rager. Hardstyle is making a serious comeback with such groundbreaking producers like Atmozfears on the scene, and this original is no exception. With obvious orchestral influence and great progression throughout the track, this is one of my favorites in the bunch. Catchy melodies highlighted by the classic hard kick and intricate pitch bends secure this as one of the best in Expedition.

Au5 & Fractal – Blue

Rounding out the incredulous amount of genres in this compilation album, the Au5 and Fractal drumstep collab is a great addition. Blue couldn’t be a better title for this track; if colors were musical moods, this is, indeed, blue. The heavy grit and grime basslines we have come to expect being combined with a variety of symbiotic melodies and amazingly processed kicks, this track in itself is worth the purchase of the entire album. The stereo imaging on this original is most excellent, but I could go on about the production value of this track all day. Just listen, and pick up this compilation if you haven’t already been sold on it.

Rameses B – Transformations (feat. Laura Brehm)

Skipping a few to the Rameses B and Laura Brehm original production, Transformations, and you’ll hear why. Described as dubstep, this track is much more melodic than we have come to expect. A chill-out transition if you will, the production in Transformations is what really takes the cake. An excellent contribution from an excellent producer, it’s what we’ve come to expect from Monstercat.

Razihel – Renzokuken

Time for one of my favorite parts of this journey, Razihel the Italian production genius’s addition. Renzokuken, an electro original, seems to take some notes out of Madeon’s book with a range of lofty melodies playing off of each other to incredible heights. Vocal chops and a seven minute play-time with a unique song structure and phenomenally used samples result in an all-around great dance track. Be sure to check out Razihel on Facebook to build his ever-growing fan base.

Astronaut – Rain

Following an extremely strong track, Astronaut brings it in the original Rain. An electro-house banger with a strong vocal lead and beautifully simple production, Astronaut’s talents are apparent. With a similar synth to Razihel‘s Renzokuken, this is a perfect follow-up track. The vocal usage truly makes this track and the upbeat drop is exciting and intense. A true to form electronic dance music track, this is yet another excellent contribution.

Varien – The Scarlet Dawn

Varien, an extremely talented multi-genre artist, kills it with The Scarlet Dawn. Beautiful orchestral influences and string instrument usage meld into a deep, bass-driven drop with epic vocal samples overlaid; reminiscent of an epic movie soundtrack. Guitar chords play off of synths and heavy kicks to create a metal feel that is a straight genre-buster. Almost rock, almost dubstep, but something in between; Varien is a production genius, and this track exemplifies that fact.

Pegboard Nerds – Bassline Kickin

Pegboard Nerds are back with a hit original Bassline Kickin , and just as described, the bassline KICKS. Unique breakdowns and dirty synths are characteristic of this drop-heavy track. Pegboard Nerds are making a name for themselves with extremely original tracks and a different perspective than the majority of producers on the scene. Different drop styles that somehow meld seamlessly and a variety of vocal chops round out this instant hit.
