To say that 2013 was a monumental year for Trance is quite an understatement, as one of the scene’s biggest ambassadors accomplished yet another successful world tour that featured the best talents from around the globe. The legend that is Armin van Buuren needs no introduction, as his vast contributions for Trance has evolved the scene into a thriving, booming culture of exceptional individuals. Last year, Armin celebrated 600 episodes of his world renowned A State Of Trance radio show by pulling together The Expedition World Tour, which spread Trance to legions of new fans, as well as bolstered support for all sub-genres; (with the 138 style receiving the highest response from die hard listeners). Now, we are at that time yet again with Armin officially announcing the highly anticipated ASOT 650 New Horizons Tour for 2014. While Armin and Markus Schulz collaborated for the incredulously iconic ASOT 600 anthem, The Expedition, it was now up to the fans to decide who would develop the flagship single to lead the charge through Armada‘s world tour. While fierce competition came from the elite talents of MaRLo, Andrew Rayel, Alexander Popov and Allen & Envy, it was ultimately the masterful Uplifting talent of Jorn van Deynhoven that finally won the draw. Through the sheer brilliance of Jorn‘s musical might, New Horizons is a worldly epic that fully defines the entire, complex genre that is Trance.
As an anthem, New Horizons was specifically constructed for two reasons: to be the defining track of the tour, and to represent Armin van Buuren, Armada and Trance as a whole. It needed to reach a sound that would fill an arena with massive amounts of raw power while maintaining a heavy degree of deep, emotional clarity. It needed to satisfy the entire community of Trance, who is often notorious for hating one another on cries of hostile takeovers and musical integrity. But most importantly, it needed to weave a rich, dynamic narrative that intimately speaks to the hearts and souls of individuals whilst connecting everyone under one, unified sound. To be honest, I am seriously impressed with the way Jorn has constructed this track. He nails each and every point that was needed to become a classic and the mixture of styles from Orchestral to Tech Trance and finally to Trance is beautiful as it is unique. Its complex sound design is directly on point and its detailed orchestration has never been better. While this track showcases a different avenue in his sound, it is nevertheless a virtuosic masterpiece that truly represents Trance in all of its wondrous glory.
