We Are The Movement, a non-profit organization that uses DJing, dance and percussion to positively impact at-risk youth, featured special guest DJs for their latest workshop called A Positive Spin in Optimist Youth Homes, LA. About a dozen DJs, including Kill The Noise, A-Trak, Prothohype, AC Slater and Mr Choc, taught the local youth basic skills in DJing and music production. Native Instruments, Pioneer and Novation donated DJ and music production equipment, enabling the Optimist Youth Homes to open an in-house production studio.
“Most of the people that are actually teaching the workshops today are pretty much self-taught. So the fact that we’re all here and showing these people, this may inspire them to become something like we are,” said Mr. Choc, director of LA’s Scratch DJ Academy and member of The Beat Junkies DJ collective.
Partnering with Give A Beat, another nonprofit, We Are The Movement is hosting an online fundraising auction to support both organizations’ mission of driving positive change in LA’s youth through dance music. The fundraiser ends December 22 and includes tickets to Spring Awakening Music Festival and Ultra Music Festival, merchandise from Krewella and Fool’ s Gold Records, Major Lazer NYE festival tickets, Native Instruments and Pioneer gear, and more.
