On this week’s Unsung Heroes, we dig up a mix from 2012 as we spiral through a plethora of styles and genres. One of Trance’s most uncommon and unique producers is none other than Maryland’s own Casey Keyworth, or known by his stage name as Breakfast. Breakfast first broke through the scene through Ferry Corsten‘s personal label, Flashover Recordings, with some impressive single releases such as The Horizon, The Sunlight and Remember. While continuing to hone his craft, he sought out native talent within the Northeast United States and has collaborated with such local Trance heroes like Mike Saint-Jules and Eco. While quickly rising to fame throughout his early years, he was noticed and subsequently signed to a handful of releases by the mighty Anjunabeats family, whose unique, individualistic sound could prove to be essential the label. During his stay at Anjunabeats, he released a personal single entitled Meridian and a beautiful remix to Andrew Bayer‘s single, From The Earth, that has remained an ironclad favorite throughout the entire discography of the label. However, with the release of his single, Meridian, he was investing more and more time into his personal side project of Keyworth.
While Breakfast was his ‘official’ stage name, his side project started to become a bigger investment of his time due to the sheer nature behind the project. The Keyworth persona was for his more experimental side as many of his releases cover a large span of genres and styles. His highly unusual orchestral ideologies, wildly inventive timbral creations and intense focus on the deeper meaning behind the music have been championed by many people who may feel that the music of today has lost its identity and art. Eventually, he dropped the Breakfast name and focused entirely on the Keyworth moniker. His subsequent singles of Submerged and Just Us are deep journeys through enigmatic voids. His remix to Andrew Bayer‘s Dedication To Boston’s Waste Management System focuses on pure Electronica and his murky Dubstep remix on Boom Jinx‘s recent single, When You Loved Me, shows his rebellious nature towards musical risks and a special spark of a man free from all labels and inhibitions. As well as maintaining a website that focuses on upcoming artists who are rule breakers such as himself, his unusual philosophies on production smoothly transfer over into his wide, multifaceted mixing abilities. Armed with 2 hours on his home label’s Anjunabeats Worldwide‘s radio show last year, he crafted a mix that spans through a multitude of genres to truly make it one of the most unique and awe inspiring mixes ever created.

Keyworth starts our odyssey with a beautifully deep Tribal cut to start at an ebbing low with the Innervisions Orchestral Mix of Underworld‘s single, Crocodile. (Ed Note: Before we continue, just know that about 95% of all tracks will be tracks you haven’t heard before, so strap yourselves in). The mix then takes a decidedly deeper and techier turn with Casey exploring talents such as Guy J, and Matt Lange, (while throwing in the all time classic of Sasha‘s Coma). As the mix continues, we realize that not only was each track hand picked for mix flow, but also understand real depth behind each and every selection. His mixing skills are on point and he has the rare ability to flawlessly transition between genres while maintaining the bigger picture for the mix as a whole. Keyworth pulls into some old school with his Breakfast single of Idlewild before pulling into the rough underground of Trisco‘s Musak. Throughout the hour, he pulls out Breakbeats, Techno, House, Bass, Trance, Rap and more with forward thinking artists such as Mat Zo, Joris Voorn, Peo De Pitte and James Holden. Finally, he ends the mix with a few tracks from both personas to finish off on a personal note. With an entire scene that seems hellbent on rehashing the same ‘tracks of the month’ on a consistent basis, Keyworth is a refreshing artist who plays what drives him to create music towards his listeners. Maybe rather than catering to popular fanbases and completely destroying their musical integrity, producers should take a leaf out of Casey‘s book and invite listeners into the mind of a truly unique and pioneering musician.
