How Hakkasan Lured Their Prey Into Its All-Star Line-Up

Your spiritual kings have been making quite a bit of dough for themselves. New reports have emerged that reveal the likes of Calvin Harris, Deadmau5, Skrillex, Afrojack and Tiesto to be earning extortionate amounts of money and expensive items, the likes of which look like they belong in some high octane thriller involving drugs, dodgy deals and a lot of partying.

Actually, that sounds about right.

“Hakkasan had sent personalized pitch books to the Wynn DJs it wanted to poach [from the Wynn]: Tiesto, Calvin Harris, deadmau5 and Afrojack. The books described the perks that a Hakkasan residency would offer, including a chauffeured Maybach limousine, access to a fleet of private jets and a two-story SkyLoft suite with a butler. Hakkasan was also offering more money.”

Yes, a-ha, I mean… you what?! Maybachs? Private jets? A SkyLoft suite? How much more ridiculous can this get? This amount of wealth was so beyond my comprehension I had to look up what a SkyLoft even is! (It’s rather lovely, although I could imagine the likes of a Bond villain living in a SkyLoft. Purely because of the name alone.)

But the madness doesn’t stop there. Apparently, Calvin Harris has been offered $300,000 a show while Deadmau5 will earn even more. Although this been proclaimed as bullshit (unclear whether it’s bullshit because the number is too low or too high), it isn’t unlikely. Sheik Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan has already spent $100,000,000 on Hakkasan Ltd. Las Vegas, such is his dedication to building his EDM empire. The full quotation is nothing short of tragic:

“In January, the Wynn announced its d.j. lineup for 2013. Calvin Harris, Tiesto, and Deadmau5 were all decamping for Hakkasan, and Skrillex had signed a contract with Light. Waits said that, despite his years of building relationships, it had all come down to money: Hakkasan would pay Calvin Harris roughly three hundred thousand dollars per show; Deadmau5 would earn even more. (Neil Moffitt, the C.E.O. of Hakkasan, declined to discuss specific figures, except to say that Waits’s numbers were “bullshit.”)”

Whelp. Clearly this EDM bubble just keeps growing and growing as more money is pumped into it. When it eventually bursts, most of us won’t even hang around to watch the dust settle. Until then, long may the spice flow.
