Could This Be The Most ‘Daft’ Interview Ever Conceived?

Who says job interviews have to be depressing?

Who says job interviews have to be depressing?

I’ve only had two job interviews in my life. Thankfully, I’ve had a 100% success rate. One was for a job at a local supermarket which I held for 6 years and one was for… this website. Obviously. For the supermarket interview, a young 13 year old me went one on one with the shop’s manager as I revealed what I could bring to the retail environment while speaking in a squeaky pubescent voice. The YourEDM interview wasn’t much different.

In light of recent events however, I should be grateful there was no talk of putting together a Daft Punk dance routine for my would-be employers.

When 21 year old Alan Bacon received an interview for British electronic superstore Currys, he got together his astronomic photographs and swatted up on the company, like anyone else would do to prepare for an interview (Well, minus the astronomic photographs). However, upon being ushered into a room and receiving a brief introduction to the other Currys hopefuls, Alan Bacon was asked to do the unthinkable and put together a dance routine:

“I felt so embarrassed and uncomfortable. I ended up dancing to Around the World by Daft Punk, doing rubbish robotics in my suit in front of a group of strangers. I told my dad it was like a scene out of The Office. I would have walked out but I need a job.”

What’s worse is he didn’t even get the job, making him like an American Idol reject who just made a fool of himself in front of millions. However, this isn’t reality TV and Currys officials were angry that job applicants were judged upon their dancing abilities:

“In fairness, I think employers want to make the interviews fun. But they often forget that people going for jobs can be really insecure and it’s a huge deal for them. They want to come across at their best. I think it shows a lack of understanding and a complete disconnect between businesses and job hunters.”

To apologize for their actions in these tough economic times, the superstore graciously invited Alan Bacon back for a Daft Punk free interview. Mr. Bacon politely declined and an investigation continues into the actions of the employers (Hopefully their exquisite music tastes will save their hides).

But it’s a good thing for Alan Bacon that I wasn’t applying for Currys… I would have aced that interview.
