In a recent Rolling Stone feature, Deadmau5, Steve Aoki and Moby, amongst other artists, shared their wildest and craziest fan stories. From a guy dressed up in a ten foot tree costume in Toronto to a guy lighting up a flare in Glasgow in the middle of a crowd, these stories are pretty nuts. I was at a festival in Glasgow when a guy set off a giant flare right in the middle of the crowd. I looked out, and everyone parted like it was the Red Sea, and there was one guy standing alone with this giant flare burning. After a minute, he threw it towards the front and I said, ‘Oh shit.’ Thankfully no one was hurt.
Moby
The first time I played in Toronto, which would’ve been ’90, ’91 or ’92, it was at a late-night rave. A man dressed as a ten-foot tall tree ran on stage and started wrestling with me. And of course, because it’s a rave, there’s no security, and I think people thought it was part of the show, but it was just this man on ecstasy losing his mind, dressed up as a ten-foot tree who kind of tackled me. So there I was literally wrestling in so far as you can wrestle someone dressed up in a ten-foot tree costume at three o’clock in the morning in front of an audience out of their mind at a rave in Toronto.

In 2012, on the Deadmeat tour, there was a fan at one of my shows who climbed up on the roof and hung upside down just to get close enough to give me a high five in my DJ booth that was 20 feet above the ground.

Hard Summer 2012 watching Zedd inside a tent. As he starts to play his hit spectrum, someone in the very middle of the tent sprayed pepper spray. But, for the first few seconds of eyes burning and noses stinging, there was a mini panic among the crowd and someone yelled “tear gas”. Never seen anyone empty out a tent so fast, just to realize it was pepper spray and rush back in 30 seconds later.
at edc vegas this year some guy climbed up the side of the mega structure and started doing pull ups 30 feet off the ground.
when John De Son played in Malmö this year somone in the middle of the crowd also lit up a flare with a bright red light, it was crazy. But the security got the guy like a minute after.
Electric Zoo 2013
I was at the front of an ocean of ravers during Tiesto’s closing set Saturday night, when a slim, hearty fellow, who was assuredly new to the festival scene (very average joe), asked to be brought up so he could surf the crowd, front to back. And so he was and so he did: thousands of arms and hands pulsing with energy carrying him along the way.
“There he goes.” I thought. ”Never see him again.” But no, he came back to the very front to once again surf the sea of hands…FIVE MORE TIMES.
At coachella 2011 I saw some girl trying to jump off the ferris wheel, she was dangling off the side. I talked to herafterwards and she was beyond gone on some drug, she tried to get back on the ferris wheel again, but I helped stop her and got security. Scary.
