In a recent interview with Mixmag, Armin Van Buuren chatted about the current “shift” in production and how producers are focusing more on the drop than any other element.
“Everything’s become about the drop and the breakdown. I want to bring people on a journey rather than just bringing them the drops.”
He goes on to discuss his Armin Only tour, saying:
“It’s going back to my roots with trance, I’ve got a new director, a completely new set of singers, a new theme and a few special surprises.”
What do you think? Is commercial EDM all about the drop now? And how can we get out of this drop craze?

He’s is correct in every sence that’s’s all people care about now adays its all the same!
I’m with Armin. Drops can be energetic of course but that isn’t music. Music is melodies, harmonies, and everything in between rather than just some drop playing the same note a number of times with a drum kick. Keep up the good work Armin!
Armin, my role model, is absolutely right.
Only because I’m OCD – “Armin”. Minor typo 🙂
This guy is just brilliant…
well other than the drop and breakdown… you have the intro and the outro haha… I mean all of it is equally important, but I pay more attention to detail in my drops and breakdowns than I do in my intros/outros..
haven’t we been discussing this for years?….
