UPDATE: Electric Zoo has just announced how it will deal with refunds. Read their statement here:
Due to serious health risks, the last day of Electric Zoo festival has been cancelled as recommended by the City. As a result of 2 deaths and 4 individuals currently in critical condition, the festival organized by Made Event had to shut its doors early. The police said both deaths appear to be “non-suspicious” and consistent with MDMA use. Below is the Office of the Mayor’s official statement.
“Due to serious health risks, the Electric Zoo music festival on Randall’s Island on Sunday, September 1st has been cancelled. The City recommended cancellation and the event promoters have agreed.
During the first two days of the Electric Zoo music festival, two concert-goers have died and at least four others became critically ill and have been placed in intensive care at area hospitals. Both deaths appear to have involved the drug MDMA (ecstasy, or molly). The Electric Zoo organizers have worked with City officials to reduce health risks at this event, but in view of these occurrences, the safest course is to cancel the remaining day of the event.”
The two dead have been identified as Jeffrey Russ, 23, of Rochester, NY, and Olivia Rotondo, 20, of Providence, RI. Ms. Rotondo was taken to Metropolitan Hospital and pronounced dead at 9:30pm. Mr. Russ went into respiratory arrest around 3:10am, and was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital. Our deepest condolences are with the families and friends of these two individuals, and all others who have been affected by this tragedy.
Hydration certainly seemed to be an issue yesterday. As early as Alvaro’s set, festival producers came over the speakers on Main Stage West pleading to attendees to stay hydrated. Then, as the festival was just winding down late last night it seems that Electric Zoo ran out of water:
10:35 & @ElectricZooNY is out of water. Not very safe & neglectful for a festival to not have water. This makes me sad.

And yet it’ll just be brushed aside as another accident and people will continue to take Molly :/
It’s probably Methylone, being sold as Molly. Sad to read
The same thing happens from alcohol poisoning and it’s not like people don’t continue to drink. Your argument is invalid.
People blaming the drug are you serious? Electric zoo should be held accountable. They didn’t have any water. People taking ecstasy in a dry environment for so long will cause death.

Nobody forced those people to take drugs. Everyone who takes E or whatever else, knows they are fucking drugs that could possibly hurt you or kill you. I feel sorry for their families and I am sorry to hear that this happened to anyone.
So everyone there was on molly yet two people die. No way it was from molly could be from health conditions or mixing alcohol and dehydrated. I bet they won’t say they died from molly. There gonna say dehydration. Lets wait and see .. I was gonna get tickets for Sunday. Good thing I bought them for sat instead had an epic day there first ever at a show like that! Will always remember hardwell and tiesto going hard
They didn’t run out of water. I was getting free refills add late as 10pm and were giving out free water by the case as soon as heat became an issue. Anyone who says otherwise wasn’t there.
Ezoo was more than prepared there was help stations medics and free water everytwhere a combnation of heat exhaustion drugs & alcohol and of course heavy crowads was to blamed. To penalize everyone is unfair. I watched wasted people wander further into the crowd rather than stopping restin & rehydrating. Really disappointed.

I think the reason given for the death and OD’s at the Zedd show in this article seem pretty on point – a bad batch of pills going around.

WHY DON’T YOU JUST STAY HOME AND DO YOUR DRUGS. I’m sick and tired of you people peddling your filth at what could have been a fun, friendly event. I just want to hear some freakin music.
Now I have to sit through a stoner’s lecture on why certain drugs aren’t bad, and then the sad news of the deaths caused directly by people taking drugs.

This whole situation stinks. EDM fans are dying, & shows are getting cancelled. I think part of the issue is that people aren’t as educated about drug use as they thing they are. Please take a minute to educate yourself: http://www.dancesafe.org
I would find it hard to believe that MDMA alone (if at all) was the issue. I mean lets really break down the use of this drug right now across the world and how often there mare any proven cases of this type of thing.. I’m not saying there are not dangers with the drug but really there are millions of users right now and more often then ever and problems like this are almost none existent in pure and normal use. it really sucks that even educating people on this drug seems to be looked down on. I doubt usage will go down and yet we just ignore public understanding..
