Created just over a year ago, Indecent Noise‘s personal label, Mental Asylum, has completely stormed through the Trance scene through hostile takeovers and has been the home of many smashing singles and remixes. The label’s unique, edgy sound that combines elements of Electro, Glitch and Complextro have almost created an entire sub-genre all its own, and each release brings fantastic, rough musical possibilities to the table. Featuring the highest in production talent from high end artists such as Eddie Bitar, Peter Plaznik, Will Atkinson, Jase Thirlwall and more, it has created a mighty reputation that only releases the top in quality. After a cavalcade of burning releases from Matt Bowdidge and Calvin Logue, Mental Asylum introduces a new patient to the ward with the upcoming talent of Robbie Van Doe. Situated in the U.K., he has been a staple producer for the Discover label family and his releases have consisted of some great Uplifting cuts. However, Doe is unleashing his hissing, demonic side and spews metal dissolving acid with his upcoming EP and each one proves t0 thrash listeners on the ground with cold, dead eyes and rabid, unforgiving vengeance.

Devil’s Night starts with seismic basslines and Hard Groove-esque percussion as an incredibly clean, yet slightly coarse sixteenth note synth line brings affirmative drive towards the mix. Doe has done a fantastic job of keeping things simple and organized and it definitely shows through his precise musical organization. Somber, yet forceful melodic lines break the flow of the bassline and provides a great musical contrast between the soft ostinatos and the determined drive of the basslines. The breakdown brings things to a hushed suspense, as it cuts to a fantastic quote from the 1994 movie, The Crow, stating, “A man has an idea. The idea attracts others, like-minded. The idea expands. The idea becomes an institution. What was the idea? That’s what’s been bothering me, boys. I tell ya: when I used to think of the idea itself, it put a big ol’ smile on my face.” It transitions into a euphoric section where expansive pads run free in pure bliss before repeated snare hits snap the musical direction back into focus. As the energy continues to expand to a frantic high, the quote screams at the top of his lungs: “I want all you boys to look me straight in the eye one more time and say: ARE WE HAVING FUN OR WHAT??!!” Grating raw synths unleash full, unabated power with furious acid lines and incredible power, supplemented by Electro wubs and rising synths to raise as much hell as possible within the rabid, depraved hours of Devil’s Night.

Oddly enough, Devil’s Night is actually the tamer of the two releases and Judgement is where Robbie seriously goes mental on the production and musical outlooks. Starting out with incredibly hard hitting basskicks and headbanging percussion, vicious basslines clash head on with flitting acidic lines and flowing, driving harmonic synths to bring the phrase to a fantastic high point. The breakdown again brings things to a irritated lull as a great quote from Judge Dredd states with cold honesty: “In case you people have forgotten, this block operates under the same rules as the rest of the city. Ma-Ma is not the law… I am the law. As of now under sentence of death. Any who obstruct me in carrying out my duty will be treated as an accessory to her crimes. And as for you Ma-Ma… judgement time.” As the musical direction brings the energy to an ebbing low, wild percussion rolls bring the energy to a delirious high before Doe goes absolutely berserk on the drop. Insane, deranged and screaming at the top of its lungs, the utter filth that emerges completely wipe all incoming thought processes and instead possesses listeners to completely let go of their inhibitions and smash their bodies until the leave nothing but a bloody mess behind. One of the most brutal Tech Trance releases of 2013, it is almost frightening to see the psychotic potential that Robbie Van Doe contains.

An extra bonus to this stunning EP is a remix from rising Trance producer, Lostly. A relatively new producer to pull onto the scene, he too is a part of the large label family of Discover Recordings and has had a number of releases, (such as his mix to Ehren Showers‘s 3D, and his singles of If Not You, Who? and Second Sight), being heavily supported by artists such as Aly & Fila, John Askew, Jordan Suckley and Mark Sherry. In his rendition, he offers a stripped down, technical mix and although it is not as manic as the Original, it still packs an incredible punch that’s lethal towards dance floors. Starting with rigorously clipped basslines and melodic lines, Lostly keeps the orchestration incredibly precise while still maintaining the energy of the track (which is supported by the great acidic line that purveys the entire soundscape). The breakdown brings quiet intensity towards its ostinatos as the repetition of the phrases, (along with the sinister growls of Judge Dredd), bring a great sense of grumbling evil towards the mix. As ‘Judgement time‘ is uttered, damage reports are instantly issued as the result of a catastrophically fatal bassline that completely drills through the ear and into the brain, sending listeners reeling with its baffling power and intensity. With incredibly devastating basslines and surgical orchestration, it is an essential tune that is a must have for any true Tech Trance fan.
