As an artist who truly defies genre, the undeniable talent of Mat Zo has come a very long way from his humble beginnings. Starting from Drum & Bass to Trance and finally into a territory that is all his own, Zo has taken an incredibly different path from what many of his colleagues have taken. Each release seems to be a brand new surprise from the producer and the sheer rebellion of conventional production rules have made him not only stand out, but has transformed him into a true visionary of the scene. He has been locked in the studio for the past couple years putting the finishing touches on his debut album and from the samples that we have heard, it is a completely different from the Mat Zo we knew a couple of years ago. One track from the album that is getting an early release is the very highly anticipated single from Mat Zo entitled Pyramid Scheme. First debuted during the Trance Around The World 450 show in India, it has sparked huge interest from both the incredible mixture of musical styles and from the vocals of the legendary Hip Hop group, Public Enemy. Having the chance to actually work with vocalist, Chuck D of the group, the track is a stunning culmination of 2 years of hard work in the studio.
At this point, I would usually deliver a detailed analysis of the piece, but I am going to do something different today. I’m going to offer my personal opinion on the piece and things that I liked and didn’t like. To start off, Mat Zo, in my opinion, is one of the absolute best musicians in the scene right now; one of the rare producers who are actually creating music from their minds instead of the droves of cookie cutter artists (to which I won’t name). His astounding timbral selection is almost unmatched and if every producer had the same mindset as Zo, we would have a scene 100x more vibrant than the shine that we have now (not to say it isn’t successful now, mind you). One thing that stuck me off was the fact that the ‘drops’ sounded a lot like his past works such as Frequency Flyer. Now before everyone grabs their pitchfork and hunts me down, that is a small criticism when it comes to the amazing work done to this piece. From the mind-boggling sub-bass work in the beginning to the random, chance induced sounds at the beginning to the next level production work on the vocals, it is heavily evident of the amount of care and time that was put in. The choices of sounds, the impeccable orchestration and the vibrant variety of styles propel this release far above most releases and is truly a tour de force for the brilliant mind that is Mat Zo.
