If you needed any more reaffirmation that Electronic Dance Music is booming, all you have to do is take a look at the Ibiza International Summit Report released back in May. Oddly overlooked by many publications, this report goes in depth concerning a flurry of data, whether it be social media or brand sponsorships. What is of more interest to us though is their section dedicated to the growth in digital sales year over year (YoY). In the graph below you can see that Dance music effectively witnessed a growth of 36% in 2012, far outpacing its closest competitor, Country, which stood at 13%.
If this short article garners a lot of interest, we’ll make sure to analyze further into this report and others available to affirm the growth and profitability of the genre.

its funny cause like 6 years ago ClearChannel made it there goal to eliminate EDM music stations because they felt EDM was dying out and the genre was not profitable.
6 years ago everyone called it TECHNO 😀
according to billboard,
the growth in digital sales year over year you can see that Dance music effectively witnessed a growth of 36% in 2012.
Wali Finkbeiner this is our time man!
Interesting!
fuck I liked it better when it wasn’t as mainstream. yeah, yeah I’m being a hipster, but I don’t want my favorite genre to become influenced with pop-like aspects as it already has started becoming..
the edm revolution is here.
Country grew by 13% WTF?
edm is awesome.. I just don’t like seeing people jumping on edm dick just to try & cash in on it because it’s hot at the moment.
It’s great that the genre’s growing, but the problem with fast growth is that we’re getting sooooo many newbs who don’t know a lot about EDM’s origins, or sub-genres, etc., and don’t plan on learning about it. Nor do they plan to really dig deep into the underground to go pursue a sound they like (however, mainstream EDM is still really good nowadays, and I think it good in a way that they’re so simply satisfied, but just taking what’s popular shows a lack of dedication to the genre). And, with this new influx of newbs, the old timers who actually know their stuff start to jump the boat, ’cause it’s “getting too maimstream”.
But on the positive side, you can share the music you like with more people out there, and EDM is being recognized quite commonly as the “new” cool thing.
So in the end, the massive growth of EDM has its pros and cons, but overall, I’m happy more people are realizing the sheer coolness of electronic music 🙂
this spiked interest! thanks! MORE MORE MORE.
