I first had the privilege of watching one of Moby’s live DJ sets at UMF Miami back in 2011. As someone who had grown up listening to ‘Play,’ I could not for the life of me understand why my fellow rave crew would leave Rave Jesus’s set (known to some as Kaskade) to listen to bedtime music. Until my brains were splattered all over the Carl Cox & Friends stage.

What I appreciate about Moby is the beautiful dichotomy he delivers when looking at his studio work compared to the performances he delivers at select clubs and music festivals around the world. He will cause your hair to stand-up on end in both settings, and that can be said for very few artists. I’d argue Kaskade has the ability to do the same. Think Redux tour versus UMF 2013 set.
With his latest album, ‘The Innocents,’ set to release on October 1st, Moby has teamed up with an outside producer, Mark ‘Spike’ Stent, for the first time in his career. He’s also collaborated with a long list of talent including Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, Skylar Grey and Mark Lanegan.
A press release earlier today described the meaning behind the new album’s title… “‘The Innocents’ became the inspirational motif for the album, embracing human vulnerability and the desire for human connection, while celebrating imperfection in a world that too often esteems unrealistic and artificial perfection.”

The first track to be released on the album, ‘A Case For Shame’ featuring Cold Specks, is now available on iTunes and is reminiscent of many of the tracks on his award-winning album, ‘Play’.
I’m not going to try and argue that track falls in any sub-genre of EDM, but fans of Moby’s earlier work will recognize the familiar and mystical sound of some of his most famed tracks and appreciate this new album for what it is. What you won’t appreciate? His entire “tour” to promote the new album will consist of three shows at an old theatre in L.A. Boo.
