Pegboard Nerds – Guilty Pleasures EP [Monstercat]

The Scandinavian duo made up of Alexander Odden and Michael Parsberg aka Pegboard Nerds, best known for their single “Self Destruct” and their epic remix of Krewella‘s hit single “Alive,” released their debut full-length EP on Monstercat today. While their Guilty Pleasures EP definitely goes a long ways towards showcasing this duo’s versatility, featuring influences ranging from electro-house and trap to dubstep and glitch-hop, as I listen to it over and over again, I’m finding that it doesn’t quite live up to the high expectations I had for it. My favorite tracks off this EP are definitely “How U Feelin’” and “So What,” which show off the more funky, glitchy, and melodic side of their sound that I have come to know and love. The drop in Razor Sharp VIP was definitely a nice change, but I found myself really missing the melodic intro that builds into the drop from the original, which makes the VIP’s intro sound almost hollow in comparison.

“High Roller,” the duo’s first foray in trap, shows a lot of promise but could definitely do without Splitbreed‘s immature ramblings. Don’t get me wrong though, this is definitely a good EP, but I was hoping to be absolutely blown away just like I was the first time I heard their original track “Pressure Cooker” and their remix of Morten Breum‘s “Larva (Far Away)” and that just wasn’t the case with their Guilty Pleasures EP. Were my expectations for this EP too high? I don’t think so considering how impressive the vast majority of their previous releases have been.

However, despite my opinion of this EP, I still strongly believe that Pegboard Nerds have the potential to become one of the biggest and most influential acts in the Bass Music scene. But enough about me, how do you think Pegboard Nerds’ Guilty Pleasures EP compares to their previous releases?
