Bad news for Daft Punk this week, sales for the duo’s latest Random Access Memories are down 73%. The album, which was hyped as and poised to be the biggest release in EDM and perhaps music in general, has all but fallen flat on its face. The charts below say it all…
It’s clear that Random Access Memories has failed to achieve it’s predicted potential and will likely be remembered as a serious flop. With weak sales, mostly consisting of iTunes downloads, (even though the album is available to be streamed via Spotify) it seems that this story ends not with a bang but with a “meh”.
Sales counted by Nielsen Soundscan, and shared with Digital Music News by major label executive sources. Research and graphics by Paul Resnikoff at Digital Music News.
haha maybe I should actually buy the album… <3 spotify.
Let me tell you the pure simple fact. Daft Punk is the best ever. EVER! Hands down. And their new album is probably the greatest album ever made. So I don’t give a shit what any data or shithead says. This album will never be remembered as anything other then the best album in human history to date. So FUCK. YOU!
v lol. Daft Punk’s fans are like Gaga’s Little Monsters
Sempre soube que não ia vender muito 🙁 mas amo mesmo assim <3
Daft Punk hates being labeled as EDM… The U.S has turned that genre into a fist pumping shit nightmare nowadays
Very hard to top Discovery when most of that album was sampled.
yeah it really is the best work ever…. they dont deserve shit head ratings
so is this the “Sam Bowie” of albums?
thats 400,000 sold who gives a fuck – secondly they hype is gone the album is out and frankly it could have been mixed better – with all the negative feedback i expected this to happen
“[RAM] will likely be remembered as a serious flop.” what the fuck? are you serious?
Daft Punk…. EDM? HA! Funny joke but go on.
The reporter was obviously dropped on his head as a child
What do you expect, there was way too much hype over the album and the expectations were set so extremely high that anything short of total perfection would have been considered failure by this logic. I loved RAM, one of my all time favorite albums from any genre. This article was biased, flawed and worded very poorly. I think Daft Punk are the best at what they do, they don’t need to take shit from dumbass reporters like this guy!
Their first ever Number 1 studio album both in the US and at least 7 other countries will be considered a flop? Mmkay.
You have to take into account that I’m sure when one person downloads it they give it to about five of their friends. I don’t think I’ve seen an album be so blatantly pirated in a good while.
Album sales don’t mean much anymore, it all comes down to live performances and tours.
Mixed better? it was the cleanest mix I’ve ever heard on any production ever! I don’t even really like daft punk, and I hate “Get Lucky,” but I did think it was good music, the whole album flowed really well and was really chill. However, it really isn’t my musical taste, not one for disco too much, and most of the songs would have been way better without any lyrics, but the production was absolutely flawless. I’ve only been producing for two and a half years, but from what I know of it, and I think it’s substantial in comparison to the ordinary person with no experience if not to a professional producer, it was mixed almost too perfectly. It was all so clear and sharp. Listen to it on a good system and everything sounds clear as a bell. With all that said, I give it a seven out of ten.
LOL @ everyone raging about this, its the plain and simple truth.
Obviously this has nothing to do with the quality of the music on the album, and everything to do with the simple fact that each one of those 338,677 sales in week one also represents anywhere from two to twenty illegal downloads.
The days of selling music are over. Selling music is irrelevant, because the internet has made it possible for everyone to have all the media they want for free. This simple reality isn’t going away. It’s here, and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it.
The most successful musicians in the world realize this fact, and release their music without all the outmoded, outdated, and irrelevant modifiers like copyrights and mandatory payment obligations. The most successful musicians have left those failed systems behind, instead asking that their fans make direct donations to support their art–provided their work is making them happy–to attend their performances, and to tell their friends.
That is the future of music: artists supported directly by the people who appreciate them. No more middle men. No more non-contributing, non-creative, mediocre people in stale suits skimming off both artist and audience. No more blood sucking leaches choking the life out of humanity. No more God damn capitalism.
Vive la révolution!
live performances and tours, which daft punk doesn’t do anymore.
I wouldn’t illegally download this album. Ick.
almost 450k sales in 2 weeks is actually really good for 2013 how much were they expected to sell 1m? that’s a lot for anyone right now..
ask justin Timberlake. he sold 1million. but again… thats another topic of choice
Daniel Minaya album sales really don’t mean as much anymore but they are a representation of a trend. RAM did flop
Did you attend Journalism school? You have one source for your entire false claim. Only even bother with a half-assed intro, chart and conclusion. Is this supposed to be like that daft punk skrillex meme.
I think that with almost 90 million streams on Spotify they don’t really care about CD or iTunes sales.
