After catching their set at Ultra Music Festival I immediately hopped on the Goldfish bandwagon Not only are these guys musical geniuses but their music is just utterly awesome. They recently released a music video for the track “One Million Views”. The video depicts many of the major commercial DJs (Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Skrillex, David Guetta, Steve Aoki) conforming to button pushing and the obsession with getting views and fans, even if they are bought.
Although some of them may as well be playing solitaire on their computers while “DJing” (looking at you Steve Aoki), not all of these DJs are button pushers as Goldfish portray them. That being said, “One Million Views” does raise some interesting points about the motives behind todays electronic music producers and DJs. Because making music that sounds like childrens TV show theme songs is much more admirable than making money creating music using synths and digital instruments…

Well, we have to assess why Goldfish made this video, why they make music, and why they play shows. Why does anyone make music or play shows for that matter? Every artist that acts like they are above the money, and are solely in it to make fun music could do that in their garage, but do they ever stay in their garage? No, this is exactly my point, we are all human, and obviously spreading your music and getting more people to listen to it and vibe with you is the goal. Money and fame come with that. In the way we made our society, money is a necessity, these people need it to survive. Goldfish is one of those artists I could picture calling other dj’s sellouts, which is the type of artist I hate. I hate, because they are out there for the same purpose, just haven’t reached that level of stardom so they bash the other artists for having that opportunity that they wish they could have. This video is just a great example of how hypocritical they are. “Oh blah blah everyones trying to get a million views” while they are over here putting a lot of money and production into this video they hope gets a million views. Totally contradicting. That being said, I’ve never listened to Goldfish before this, and I enjoyed the song. Also, this is just my opinion, I could really care less about all of this, I’ve just always disliked artists who publically denounce other artists, especially of the same community. 🙂

This literally sounds like Schoolhouse Rock. In no way should they be dissing any of these producers. People have to realize that producing EDM takes a lot of work and in order to share your work with a large audience you have to just hit the play button sometimes. Sure, they could hire 20 people to play all the different synths in their song on a keyboard, but that would be ridiculous. Producers like Skrillex are simply sharing their music with the audience… which is the reason for any concert. Rock musicians can play their acoustic instruments to a crowd because its feasible and possible. EDM producers can throw in some effects and that’s about it… It doesn’t take anything away from the talent of the producer. They try their best to make a show as interesting as possible, whether it be cracking champagne or crazy light shows. All in all, Goldfish has none of my respect.

It’s a critique on the fact that a lot of this type of music is purely electronic, with people disregarding artist that actually perform live and use maybe a more traditional means to create the same dance effect. I think they are awesome, groovy and create really good dance tracks, ps they don’t need to dis out to be popular. they already are.

I agree with their effort to make people understand that most EDM ‘djs’ are just retards pressing buttons, but that is not the case with Daft Punk. These guys signaled a new era in electronic music, and dear Goldfish should know better than us that everything they use is analog and most samples are made from real instruments. Lets not confuse performance with composition. Skrillex pushed buttons in both cases, but Daft Punk certainly did not.

Honestly, at no point have Goldfish said that the music created by Daftpunk and such is BAD. They simply depicted the different styles of music. And they are actually quite accurate, music made by the shown producers is mainly button pushing, Goldfish are just making a joke of it.

I don’t think you’re getting the point of the video here. Hey, I’m a Daft Punk fan. Always been. But I’m not going to let my love of their music get in the way of enjoying not only this song but this video -and getting the message without getting all worked out about it because my favorite artists had a little joke played on them. Look, even they (DP) said that EDM is in its comfort zone and it’s not changing. Millions of artists are making themselves famous by just doing what everyone else does: an upbeat song, a few buildups here and there, and a whole lotta bass. There’s no love of music there, no desire to leave their influence in history; only a wish to make a lot of money like any other. Don’t you think it’s time we stopped doing the same thing over and over and evolved elevtronic music? Maybe if we just experiment a bit with something else (like Goldfish, Daft Punk, and many other artists are doing) we might end up with something beautiful and something that’s never been done before.

Actually great multi-instrumentalists creating never-before seen combination of “traditional” instruments (like my favourite Upright bass) with synths. Pretty lovely and dancy music.
Also good producers, who can point on some disadvantages of todays electo music – “button pushing” (yes Daft Punk are shot to the dark).
