OWSLA never seems to disappoint when it comes to giving talented producers a platform to share their sound, and Phonat is a perfect example. You may remember him for his unorthodox remix of Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites which was released alongside the likes of Kaskade and Dirtyphonics. Identity Theft, released today, is a truly unique offering in a sea of similar-sounding dance productions that provides a breath of fresh air from the norm. Each track creates its own deep atmosphere, giving the EP a lot of variety, and yet Phonat‘s signature sound purveys throughout it’s entirety to make one cohesive body of work. This release is quite interesting as it steers entirely clear of high energy builds, military drums, or any of the current trends in EDM. Instead, Identity Theft opts for a calming fusion of Electronica, Deep House, and Dubstep elements that make it a must have for fans of all corners of the EDM scene. The opening track Machines Do Care is arguably the most exemplary offering, and the one track I would recommend to those looking to decide if the EP is worth the investment. However, to ignore Ride the Prejudice and the title track, Identity Theft – or any song on the EP for that matter – would be folly, as each song has a lot of merit.
