From the first moment I heard one of Sleepy Tom’s releases, I knew it was only a matter of time before he would become one of the next rising forces in electronic music. For months, his tracks have continued to develop; consistently showcasing his immaculate level of production alongside a sound that honestly resembles no one else’s in the industry. Despite my best efforts, I’m sure some of you may have yet to discover Vancouver’s best kept secret, but this is the final call – Sleepy Tom is on the rise and pretty soon everyone is going to want a little bit of what he has to offer.
Shortly after his absolutely mental edit of Zeds Dead‘s ‘Rumble In The Jungle’, which was championed by some of the biggest names in EDM, I received word that Sleepy would be releasing his debut EP on A-Trak‘s Fool’s Gold Records. After months of waiting, ‘The Currency’ is finally here and it’s even better than I expected. Fusing genres and demolishing barriers, Sleepy Tom consistently blends and mashes sounds that frankly I usually can’t even find the words to accurately describe. 
The EP itself consists of four original tracks which all highlight Sleepy’s somewhat sporadic yet distinctive sound. All four tracks vary rather significantly in sound design and tone but after much deliberation my personal favorite of the EP has to be the A-side record, ‘The Currency’. Starting off with a slower “jungle-esque” bassline, ‘The Currency’ builds and drops into a frenzy of blips, bloops and driven wobbles that playfully elevate the energy of the track to unparalleled levels. Another favorite of mine and heavy contender to ‘The Currency’ has to be ‘Snap Back Bounce’. ‘Snap Back Bounce’ initiates with an almost progressive build which leads and breaks into a pulsing house record that which will surely find its way into a number of sets this festival season.
If forced to describe Sleepy Tom‘s debut release in one word, I would use the word refreshing. His soundscapes are meticulously crafted, his melodies are playful and energetic but most of all his music is simply fun to listen to.
