Despite being one of the most influential Electronic Music artists in the world, in a recent article of NME Daft Punk admits, “…we don’t listen to a lot of electronic music. We never did.” The comment came from the question of their opinions on EDM’s biggest names such as Deadmau5 and Skrillex. While it’s generally known that Deadmau5 is close to the top tier of producers, even Daft Punk admitted that they don’t listen to him for pleasure.
“Deadmau5? No. I wouldn’t listen to Deadmau5 for pleasure. Skrillex we have a lot of respect for. He’s said that he saw our live show with the pyramid in 2007 and it made him want to make music, but it feels like he’s not copying our formula. He might be the kid that breaks the cycle…”
When asked about other EDM artists or possibly some of the best selling albums in EDM their response was a bit unsurprising:
“I don’t know EDM artists or the albums. At first I thought it was all just one guy, some DJ called EDM.”
The duo went so far as to even compare the current music in EDM as “an energy drink”, citing that, “EDM is energy only. It lacks depth. You can have energy in music and dance to it but still have soul.” It even seems that ‘flavors’ all taste the same when asked about the earlier confusion on EDM, “when asked if that was because it all sounded the same, he replied” “A little bit, yeah!”
Despite having shocking words towards EDM and its producers it shouldn’t come as a surprise. When asked on personal influences and ‘listening music’ many producers of all genres usually site other types of music. There have been times when some producers would relax and listen to rap or in Avicii’s case, Country Music.
Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories is available May 20th, be sure to grab your copy.

That’s weird.. I’m glad they make good music..
Sidenote: What’s with all the hate toward EDM these days. Edm is the best it’s been since 2009 in my opinion.
lolwut?
actually i don’t believe they would say anything like this so until i see sources i’m going to just say no.
Guy, Thomas, Don’t worry. I’ll close the loop for you both. I’m in the process of creating immortal clones.
bottom of the page… the “Source: NME” – http://www.nme.com/news/daft-punk/70303
no such article is found. thats indian based rock and roll fan who host the site which they want to emphasis in their main stream.
fake source, false info, and escalated out of envious in EDM. everyone can see for yourself at whatsoever NME page.
I enjoy their music, but I’m pretty disappointed in their attitude if this turns out to be legitimate. It promotes ignorance and generalities; admitting they don’t listen to much EDM and then being arrogant enough to cast a judgement over it as ‘lacking depth’. I know Madeon idolizes these guys, but I find his music typically has far more depth than theirs. His structures are far more intricate and immersing, and he isn’t half as arrogant.
2007 was a brilliant year for EDM. 🙂 Such brilliant tunes that sounded nothing a like.
Calabria, The Egg, Aqualight, Bring the Noise, Who’s your daddy… Still tracks 6 years on that have not got any less exceptional since I first heard them.
Skrillex better than Deadmau5?
Deadmau5 has been like Daft Punk 2.0 on so many level. The whole building an image around a character or being rather than a person. His depth for perfection and innovation is as highly rated world wide as Daft Punk.
Skrillex simply threw his computer into a blender and lucky the tape recorder was on at the right time to hear what it would sound like and then there we go. Don’t breathe this.
Oh shut the fuck up. Skrillex has almost unfair levels of talent, who are you to sit there and come out with such uneducated crap? Grow up and get a pair of ears.
“Unfair levels of talent”…..lmao! Skrillex is quite nasty indeed!
the guy who wrote this article is big dumb ass…
There’s no need to be arrogant like that. Everybody at music has a creative process.
somebody please unplug these stupid robots.
somebody please unplug these stupid robots.
How long have you been listening to “EDM”? It’s been lacking depth since 2009 at the earliest. If you think otherwise you haven’t been into the genre long enough to make such a comment.
Ian, Skrillex is a great producer. But he’s a horrible DJ. That’s something some of the newer fans to EDM don’t realize. The difference between good and great has nothing to do with the music you hear on the radio, it has something to do with the DJ on the stage. That’s why Deadmau5 is superior to Skrillex.
Some of it will lack depth, maybe even most of it. I don’t dispute that. But the same can be said of any genre. I can’t see how Deadmau5′ Strobe, Madeon’s Icarus, or Mat Zo and Porter’s Easy, have any less depth than DP’s stuff. My point simply is that statements about whole genres, races, sexual orientations, religious groups etc, stem from either ignorance or a desire to offend someone. And I realise it’s not quite in the same league as racism, but a comment like “EDM lacks depth” stems from the same misguided mode of thinking, which shouldn’t be encouraged, especially not from a superstar musical duo who act as role models for millions.
if this happened they probably meant ‘initially’ – as in before they started making house – in like the mid 90s. they wouldn’t say that now because they themselves are… 2 guys… who have worked/performed with countless others
Something tells me these are fake
daft punk rocks there the gods. screw skrillex. deadmau5 is ok
