Today, Zedd voiced his opinions on music fans via Twitter. After seeing the abuse that artists take from their so-called “fans” on social media, it comes as no surprise to me that an artist is fighting back.
I’m glad twitter brings artist and fan closer BUT…That turned into people being rude and saying mean things to the artist just to get attention and an answer. Such a selfish, stupid behavior…
Zedd couldn’t have said it better. Twitter, although it has upsides, has put artists and fans on more or less the same level. The issue is that the bigger an artist gets the more they have to put up with, well, as Zedd so perfectly put it: “selfish, stupid behavior”.
EDM artists are truly versatile, in the sense that they will adapt and change their sound as they grow. Unfortunately, as a result, such producers are most susceptible to criticism, especially when adapting to a new sound, or genre. There seems to be an ongoing trend to attack artists that reach a certain level of popularity. Just look at Skrillex, as he rose to fame many people began to criticize him and call him a sellout, saying he had crossed over into the realms of pop.
Zedd brought up an interesting point about this in his twitter rant saying”
When I was a (young) kid the only thing I wished for my fav bands was exposure & success. I’d celebrate if I saw/ heard them on TV: radio.
Maybe electronic fans should take a step back. Instead of becoming jealous that they now have to share their favorite artist with the world, fans should be elated that their beloved producer is experiencing success.
Zedd’s tweets:
I respect him so much more now, not only for the reaction about the behavior but that he has also discovered Billy Talent. Zedd is a true artist <3.
ooooh yeeeeaaaaah. I saw these today.
I don’t use Twitter, so….yeah XD
100% agree with him.
apply this to what everyone is saying about the new daft punk!
Much respect brotha! Love Billy Talent as well and love your music! Keep it up, you definitely have a good mindset! Don’t let the fans influence your thoughts, let the music do it! However you probably already know this 🙂
you’re right man!
He sucks anyways.
LOVE LOVE LOVE and respect too! SO talented, so true and so right with what he said!
Young kids will always say stupid things. Just ignore the lil bastards
I totally understand where you are coming from. Yeah, everybody dogs on Skrillex, because instead of liking the artist, they decided to follow everybody else on the Skrillex Hate Train. Same thing with Datsik and Excision, other top dubstep artists. We would all like to say ‘I love dubstep! I love Datsik and Excision!’, but the minute you find some other dubstep fan, they’ll most likely criticize you for liking them, and say that if you were a real fan of dubstep, you’d be praising the name of Skream or Benga.
People have been doing this for years, even when there was no Twitter. Artists can actually see all the hate now, instead of it just being something said behind their back.
The kind of hate artists generate from fans who’ve seen a shift or change in their style is alarming. As a media person – I wrote an article on how many radio and mainstream artists use the same generic formula to churn out the sure fire festival hit. Artists who use this formula but also add their own unique twist through the science and technicalities of production are ones that should be the shining stars.
Fans are not wrong in shouting out their opinions, but at the same time, some of the comments are alarmingly hateful. Why are you trying to spread that kind of negativity in an industry where everyone already tries to do a one up on the other?
Artists partake in the same fashion too – tell me, you’ve seen deadmau5 go off on every second artist. You’ve seen Seth Troxler write a huge piece on EDM and how it is ‘shit’. Fans take cues from their idols and do the same – if artists can hate on others why can’t they? It’s a vicious circle really – and trying to curb the negativity makes you someone who is trying to shut down an opinion. There’s a fine line between an opinion and being hateful – unfortunately it is slowly blurring.
I don’t listen to Zedd all the much, but I respect him as an artist and a person. I agree with him on this. I’m not a fan of Trap, I’m not saying I hate it, it’s just not my cup of tea, and when I heard Skrillexes recent album I wasn’t really a fan of it. Do I like his change, not really. Do I want to hear what else he releases in the future, Yes. Would I go see him preform, Yes. Is he still one of my favorites, Yes.
Respect Zedd, Respect.
Agreed just like guetta and tiesto
This is kind of what I’ve been trying to tell a few of my friends. A couple years ago they got really mad about edm becoming much more popular, and I said someone like, “if it becomes more popular, more people will be exposed to our, and maybe someone that would have never heard it otherwise, will be there next big thing in EDM and do someone revolutionary with it…”
The only criticism you’ll see from your aspiring producers/fans is “damnit zedd how’d you make that sound” 😉 you rock zedd!
BILLY TALENT YES!
Sorry, I think I totally missed the point of this…
Recycling is good for the environment!
This has everything to do with media.. media portrays things to be a certain way… there is a science and study to everything that occurs.. i’m sure tons of people (including myself) felt the way that Zedd felt about Billy Talent… This society are a flock of sheep being led by a shepherd… everything has become so fucking mainstream and the opinions of people have been molded by the media.. I used to covet amazing electronic music (specifically trance) and now everything has seemingly gone to shit (except some radio artists do have amazing music)… but what do most people consider zedd now? a radio artist… dumb shit
I LOVE BILLY TALENT! That’s a surprise haha
