Arriving on the EDM scene just over a decade ago, Phunk Investigation have steadily carved an eminent path in the scene of dance music, becoming one of the most prominent Tech-House artists ever. Their sharp synths and electrifying bass riffs bring on an exceptional sound that no other group can attain. Not only has Phunk Investigation experienced chart topping success with tracks like “From the Dust” or “Critical”, but they also hold two record labels: Miniatures Records and Phunk Traxx. Amidst the crazy touring and non-stop studio work, the guys (Dino & Stef) had a chance to talk with us about themselves as artists, their inspiration, and their huge release on Toolroom Records, “Let the Bass Kick”.
Hailing from Italy, the guys first met in 1996 while collaborating on a track in Naples. From there, the rest is history as their relationship grew and in 2001 it blossomed into the group everyone knows as Phunk Investigation. While trying to “break in” to the scene appears a daunting challenge for some, it was no obstacle for the guys when their smash “Flawless” hit the airwaves in the same year. The demand increased and so did their popularity as a few years later they put up another massive track, “Get Up Stand Up” that dominated the dance charts all over the globe.
Phunk Investigation saw a lot of early success and have experienced even more since, attributing it all to the fierce competition surrounding them: “The Top Charts, Big collaborations, remixes and gig requests around the world are the answer to our uninterrupted development.” Taking one listen to their work shows how serious they are with maintaining such a unique and appreciated sound. They have stuck to their guns over the past 12 years, which has definitely made such a impact not only on their careers but in the EDM scene as well.
In case you missed it, they had a huge release last week on one of the top labels in dance music, Toolroom Records, called “Let the Bass Kick”. It’s an electrifying track that “takes a favourite sample in a completely new direction, interspersing it with reverb-laden vocals and interjected by those trademark sharp synths, all layered over a growling bass to create a truly fat sound.” They see it as “Fuel to kick any big party off”, powerful enough to transport you to “the centre of a rammed dancefloor, surrounded by dark tunes and dancing tech-fans.” It’s impossible not to feel the heat from this sizzling track.
More importantly, they wanted to make sure no other label than Toolroom supported it: “It’s a number one label profile and [they] all are professional people. For sure we’ll get great results from this team.”
To cap off the interview, I asked them about some future collaborations they have in store for us: “We’re eager lovers of techno and tech house music. Last artist collaborations are with Robbie Rivera, Stefano Noferini, Dj Dan, David Penn, RiotGear and other big names.” They are really excited about whats to come, but chose not to disclose any more information; they like secrets.
Overall, Phunk Investigation is a group unique to most: they make great music and they do it for their fans. It’s shown in their work, their personalities, and is the reason why they’ve not only seen enormous success but also created such an intimate, familial fan-base.
