Destroid – The Invasion [Destroid Music]

Destroid_YourEDM

A few months ago we introduced Destroid – the mega collaboration between Canadian bass technicians Excision, Downlink and drummer KJ Sawka. Well fellow earthlings, the time has finally come and today bass music fanatics around the world will praise THE CLAW….. um I mean Destroid. Combining the immense amount of talent encompassed within this collaboration along with a hefty list of the industries’ most revered artists, ‘The Invasion’ couldn’t be more aptly titled and without any further ado prepare for Destroid.

The album kicks off with the groups’ first single, ‘Raise Your Fist’, which was initially released to officially announce this super group in late 2012. ‘Raise Your Fist’, is a monumental track on the album for various reasons but the one I find most endearing is its ability to establish and clarify the tone of the album. My biggest qualm with the current state of electronic music is the pressure imparted on artists to continually produce new material as fast as possible. While this may accommodate the masses, it vastly deminishes the artists’ ability to create a cohesive album. It has been stated that Destroid has been years in the making and within seconds of the first track this truth becomes eminently clear.

The album progresses with the tracks, ‘Wasteland’ and ‘Crusaders’ which employ the help of Space Laces to bring that extra bit of bass. ‘Wasteland’ is heavy, aggressive and raunchy in all the right ways. The second track of this sonic expedition wastes no time emphasizing that Destroid bring a different kind of bass. ‘Crusaders’, on the other hand, begins with a space-aged melody which quickly builds and breaks into a high energy dubstep/DnB tune that elevates the tempo of the album to new heights.

Next on the docket is ‘Flip The Switch’, a collaboration between Excision and the infamous Messinian. This collaboration should come as no surprise due to the artists’ extensive work history. Messinian‘s gritty sound flows effortlessly over Excision‘s heavy beat, slowing the pace of the album without sacrificing any of the aggression.

Progressing on, the album continues with Downlink‘s ‘Activation’ and Excision & Bassnectar‘s collaborative record ‘Put It Down’. Now in all honesty, let’s just take a moment to digest my last statement. Yes, I did indeed say Excision and Bassnectar. ‘Put It Down’ is a driven drum & bass track that combines the best of both artists. Punishing bass coupled with seemingly unparalleled sound design and progression, ‘Put It Down’ is a show stopper.

After ‘Put It Down’, Space Laces makes his return with yet another amazing collaboration in the form of ‘Bounce’. In my mind ‘Bounce’, with its rhythmic cadence and robotic samples clearly indicates the point of no return in this invasion. Mind alteration and abduction – commenced.

Now based off your own personal stamina, you may or may not have surrendered by this time in the album, unfortunately ‘Annihilate’ will provide no refuge from this sonic onslaught. ‘Annihilate’, the work of Far Too Loud and Excision once again raises the energy and reiterates the fact that, “You have been destroyed”.

The album concludes with two final collaborations in the form of  ‘Blast Off’ and ‘Funk Hole’. ‘Blast Off’, which was released a few months ago, is the work of Excision and Japanese destroyer Ajapai while ‘Funk Hole’ enlists Space Laces for his last and potentially most impressive collaboration of the album. Infusing funk with pounding bass, ‘Funk Hole’ breathes life into the conclusion of the album, leaving the listener feeling energized after an album that presumably just sequestered your mind.

All in all, ‘The Invasion’ encompasses a completeness that very few releases tend to embody. The album itself is well-crafted, the artists enrolled are of the highest caliber and the vision behind the project feel nearly tangible.
