Wolfgang Gartner Feat. Medina – Overdose [Ultra Records]

Wolfgang Gartner Feat. Medina - Overdose

Literally jumping back into the madness that is EDM, Wolfgang Gartner has come out swinging with his latest release Overdose. Featuring the lovely vocals from Medina, this love sick song is quite dark in its overall theme. As the title implies, this song is not for the faint of heart! With lyrics like, “I just wanna OD on you,” this certainly brings to light the darker side of EDM culture. Although I like the song overall, I do not condone artists giving EDM newbies the impression that you have to do drugs to have a good time. Every show and festival experience is about the amazing people you meet, the terrific memories, and awesome dance music. Remember friends, party responsibly!

  1. I understand that the song is trying to be sexy, but I do not like it when artists use drug references…especially about OD’ing. Of course drug use is prevalent in the scene; it has shaped it. I just dislike the glamorization of drugs.

  2. I just don’t think people hear “I just wanna OD on you” in a song thats just an extended metaphor about love/attraction and think… oh wow I need to do drugs to enjoy this EDM concert. Referencing drugs isn’t cool in itself, but metaphor as a tool to get a message across seems appropriate here.

The lyrics are interesting in that they will go right over the head of someone who is young/inexperienced with drugs/not closely paying attention, and will be appreciated and related to by the audience that Wolfgang is probably aiming for. I bet this song has a lot of personal meaning to him given his past. He’s come pretty far for getting his first record deal still in drug rehab. Give the man some credit, he knows exactly what he’s doing. I don’t think he’s too worried about unintentionally glamorizing drug use to the naiive 16 year old listening to this for the first time. He clearly doesn’t aim to please the people that are in the scene just for drugs anyway.

It’s clear that he makes music that is meaningful to him, and if that’s what inspires him and makes for the best results, then I’m all for it. He gets this so much more than most other artists. I hope he keeps it up.

  3. I do share your resentment for people who mindlessly perpetuate stereotypes about electronic music culture (Madonna…Trinidad James…) but I wouldn’t group Wolfgang in that category. I personally think these lyrics are pretty harmless given Wolfgang’s audience (they probably either go to shows because they want to do drugs and don’t give a shit about lyrics anyway, or will understand the metaphor of the song and recognize it as such). Just my two cents.
