2012: A Year of Greatness

2012 has been the biggest year for Electronic Dance Music as it has finally achieved the well-deserved recognition it has been working towards for years. New artists were discovered, history was made, and Dillon Francis learned karate. I’m Petey McGuire and here’s my take on everything we’ve seen this year!

5 best artists of 2012:

  1. Nicky Romero– From the hard-hitting Toulouse to his newest Prog-house anthem, Like Home, Romero has undoubtedly enjoyed the most success this year. Working with huge artists such as Calvin Harris, Zedd, and even Fedde Le Grand, has enhanced his sound, turning everything he creates into a chart-topping hit. I cannot wait to see what 2013 has in store for the young and prosperous Nicky Romero.
  2. Arty– Everything he touches turns to gold. No one can create such a beautiful, euphoric sound such as this young producer. I can only expect 2013 to treat him with even more success both inside and outside of trance as well as including more collaborations, maybe even one with Porter! (fingers crossed)
  3. W&W – Invasion. Perfectly describing their impact in trance this year, W&W rightfully deserved this recognition. Not only did they construct the ASOT 550 anthem, but also saw enormous success with their single alongside Marcel Woods and their newest release, Lift Off! Their electro-glitch sound in trance is innovative and sure to influence more emerging artists in the genre.
  4. John Dahlback – This Swedish producer, who’s been around for almost ten years, displayed his exceptional talent all over dance music this year. Not only can he create some of the biggest sounds in prog house, but his militant electro wobbles are something else. On top of that, tracks like Start Lovin’ You and Sing That were some of the prominent house tracks of the year. Dahlback’s versatility is his strength as I’m sure he’ll bring more surprises in the year to come.
  5. Tommy Trash – This crazy Aussie has absolutely rocked EDM this year. The man was on fire. His massive wobbles and screeching bass in remixes like Toulouse and Antidote crafted his success in Electro-House. Closing the year with hits like the groovy Truffle Pig and even an appearance on A-Trak’s Tuna Melt EP has proved this year as the best of his career, and 2013 will only get better.

Breakthrough Artist:

Firebeatz – This duch duo has set the electro-house world on fire with their fiery drops and ferocious bass. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just listen to Dear New York. Most importantly, they aren’t redundant, as some acts in this genre tend to be. They have a fresh, bracing sound that is not only innovative but entertaining. Firebeatz has, in the words of Afrojack, rocked the house this year from remixes like Alex Kenji’s Good Time up to their latest track, Disque, as they are steadily becoming one of the staple names in electro-house. A big congratulations to them and I can’t wait to hear what they come up with in the next year!

Three tracks you may have missed:

Diplo-Express Yourself (Gent & Jawns Remix) Trap fan or not, this remix was one of the best of the year.  It’s very possible that a duck was even sampled. Definitely keep an eye on them next year.

Rusko-Thunder (Tantrum Desire remix) The original release was stellar, but Tantrum Desire took it to the next level with their roaring dnb remix.

Justice – Newlands (A-Trak Remix) Squawking bass. Loud guitars. Thundering drums. Rock on, A-Trak.

Overall, I would like to personally thank all of you for reading YourEdm this year, my fellow writers and I deeply appreciate your support. Have a safe end of the year and an awesome 2013!
