Unsung Heroes 005: Above & Beyond – Prelude (Maluu’s Summer Bootleg Remix) [Progressive]

Last year, trance juggernauts Above & Beyond completely outdid themselves with their absolutely mind blowing track, Prelude. It incorporated many unheard of samples and synths, such as floating, time-stopping ambience and the use of African choir (which has not been prominently used in any EDM tune). This track was featured prominently in many DJ’s arsenals, including Markus Schultz, Armin van Buuren, Gareth Emery and was a featured contender on Pete Tong’s Essential Mix of the Year. It has been a featured track during Above & Beyond‘s recent Group Therapy Tour, and also has been an emotional fan favorite when played.

Relatively unknown to the larger trance sphere, underground Seattle, Washington producer Maluu has created a beautiful rendition of the piece that many people have said was ‘unremixable’. Rather than completely change the entire dynamic of the piece to electro or uplifting, Maluu has minimalistically pushed this piece to even greater heights than it was perched before. Utilizing mellow progressive synths, Maluu softens Prelude‘s virtuosity while still maintaining that push that this track somehow keeps onto listeners. Starting right off the bat, his rebounding progressive chords gives off a wonderful array of unorthodox musical chords that makes the track seem to ‘shimmer’ more than the original. Adding the innovative vocal chopping of the choir and the wonderful use of chimes and reverbed strings gives it a nice lead into the gorgeous breakdown, (which is still retained of the original). But rather than utilize the choir right away, it is stripped completely and a beautiful progressive melodic line gives goosebumps and shivers up listeners spine as it then blends in perfectly with the choir. It builds into an emotional high at the drop, which is an interesting combination of true progressive and soft, but driving trance, Couple all of those variables with a serene piano line gives this track an identity unlike any before it. Again, this has been minimally changed from the original song, and yet this song is a completely different universe from the original and gives the word ‘soaring’ an entirely new meaning.

Only receiving a little over 2000 plays in the last year alone, this has been a track that has been completely overlooked and wrongfully so. People that we have played this song have instantly loved it and it has the quality that we demand here at YourEDM. And the best part is that it is a free legal track as well! Whether you want to spin this as a DJ or wake up on a Sunday morning with it, it is a multifaceted, beautiful work of art that should not be missed by any serious music listener. While not a complete dancefloor smasher, it is an amazing track to get yourself lost in and forget the problems of the world.
