While it’s true that Kaskade‘s sound has undergone a significant evolution in the past year and a half, I thought the transition from deep house to big-room progressive was shocking enough–never did I expect him to produce dubstep, but that’s exactly what this remix of Katy Perry‘s most recent single Wide Awake is! While Kaskade does borrow a few popular dubstep conventions–emphasis on bass and a two-step halftime beat structure–Wide Awake is dubstep done Kaskade style. It’s melodic and progressive rather than focusing solely on the drop, and because it strays away from obnoxiously heavy samples and screeching atonal synthesizers, it succeeds as a quality dubstep track.
